Ciena Article

Ciena Corporation is an American telecommunications networking equipment and software services supplier based in Hanover, Maryland.

They are saying that once it hits the towers it has to be distributed via the Mobile Backhaul (MBH) network. This needs to be upgraded from copper to fiber.

Corning Article

Corning has delivered more than 1 billion kilometers of optical fiber for networks across the globe.

The article says ..
5G will "break" a lot of distributed antenna system (DAS) networks, as the antenna placement will need to be closer than in 3G and 4G deployments. Additionally, legacy copper-based infrastructures won't be able to keep up with 5G bandwidth.

Microwave Product Digest

For 30 years, Microwave Product Digest magazine has been the most comprehensive source of new product information for RF and microwave design engineers and engineering managers in the diverse array of markets and applications in which RF and microwave technology is used.

The article says ..
As fiber is an essential ingredient for achieving widespread availability of 5G, the industry has no choice but to roll it out as quickly as possible, at least in densely populated areas. The estimated spend will inevitably be far higher than expected, and there are still many complex issues which must be solved. It remains to be seen if the monetary incentives the FCC has put out to the telecommunications industry will be enough motivation to service providers to make 5G-level access available in rural areas. If they are, fiber will be the transport technology achieving it.

First Light

Headquartered in Albany, New York, FirstLight provides fiber-optic data, Internet, data center cloud and voice services to enterprise and carrier customers throughout the Northeast connecting nearly 9,000 locations in service with an additional 30,000 locations serviceable by its more than 19,000 route mile fiber network.

The article says ..
For 5G to grow and flourish, wireless carriers need to take advantage of high-capacity fiber networks. These networks often include underground or aerial fiber optic cable that is currently not being used.

When fiber was originally installed, additional lines were often added but not activated to future-proof for rising demands. A network provider can activate or “light” this existing fiber with an optical signal or install additional fiber to increase network data capacity.

Wired Magazine

The article says ..
5G Is Coming, and It’s Fortified With Fiber Countless new wireless transmitters will relay all that data to your phone, and many will connect to the internet through endless miles of new fiber-optic cable.

To make it all work, companies, including OFS Optics, a fiber-optics and cable company, are now being commissioned to produce millions of miles of new cable holding twice as many fiber pairs—two strands, one for the uplink and one for the downlink—as the old stuff.

Belden

For more than 100 years, Belden has been a leader in the design and manufacturing of insulated wire, cable and related products. Since then, Belden has transformed itself from a cable company to a signal transmission solutions provider with a complete product portfolio including cable, connectivity and networking products.

The article says ..
3 Reasons Why Fiber is the First Choice to Support 5G Networks ...

  1. Creation and Transfer of Real-Time Data
  2. Increasing Network Demands
  3. Higher Radio Frequencies and Small Cells

According to a 5G Operator Survey released by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) in 2017, 5G operators consider fiber important for the backhaul portion of 5G networks (in fact, 83% say fiber is “very important”). By the end of 2020, 33% expect their companies to be offering commercial 5G services.

Comments

Beldon, Corning, and OFS Optics (never heard of them) look like competitors.

OFS is at about 5 and a lifetime high of about 15. NASDAQ

I'm assuming it's the same company.

I was wondering what effect all the Huawei noise would do to the fiber demand ...

BT Adds U.S. Fiber Supplier to Limit Its Reliance on Huawei Gear ... here's the article. And they are also singing about the goodness of fiber ..

I did check some of the heavy nerd sites and couldn't find anything yet.

This is all I have time for .. but you asked me to look into it a bit.

By the time I'm done the stock will be up at 97 dollars.
